What started as a humanitarian manifest in 1970, organized by a senator from Wisconsin to raise awareness about environmental issues, due to its powerful message and inspiring values, managed, by the year 1990, to gain a world-wide significance, being celebrated every year in more than 140 countries. Earth Day is an occasion to reflect upon the importance preserving the environment holds for our everyday life, encouraging us towards a more responsible, a much kinder and altruistic approach with respect to our natural surroundings.
On April 22nd, 2024, Mark Twain International School joined in effort and in celebration over one billion people who dedicated their time and energy to improve the quality of our environment, to protect our planet Earth from destructive actions like air pollution, water contamination, deforestation, on the occasion of yet another Earth Day event. This year’s theme, “Planet vs. Plastics”, emphasized the urgent need for collaborative efforts to combat plastic pollution, as the actual Earth Day organization is demanding a 60% reduction in the production of all plastic products by the year 2040.
As such, our PYP students have used their voice to raise awareness about this pressing issue and made good choices to help planet Earth: they made bracelets out of plastic bags, in order to recycle the already used plastic products, planted seeds, made posters and created works of art related to this day. At the same time, our MYP and DP students rolled up their sleeves, picked up their gardening tools and actively participated in the Secondary Campus planting event, alongside their teachers and school gardener.
Not only had they sent a powerful message inside the school community and to the outside world, proving to be moral and responsible citizens, but also helped the school yard spring back to life in a vibrant and colorful burst of joy and optimism due to the plants and flowerbeds they so consciously rooted in the soil.
Well done, everyone!
